Something different thrown into the Mix

PEOPLE of all ages have been taking part in a series of events to celebrate what makes everybody different.

Hartlepool has been hosting The Big Mix '09 – a week of free, fun activities highlighting the town's rich blend of cultural, ages, abilities and sexuality.

The week, which has been organised by Hartlepool Borough Council in partnership with other organisations, has featured 250 artists and performers at five different venues.

Events included a dance marathon, an art exhibition, aromatherapy taster sessions and a cabaret by members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered communities.

A Pop Art exhibition has been held all week at the Hartlepool Art Gallery, in Church Square. Members of Hartlepool's Handprint Art Studio created artwork exploring their dreams and aspirations.

Handprint project co-ordinator Irene Ryan said: "The images are all different as the artists have reflected their work on how they feel their life has been affected by culture. The work they have produced is absolutely fabulous. They have worked extremely hard on this."

There has also been a dance marathon at the Mill House Leisure Centre organised by Tees Valley Dance.

The event gave youngsters the chance to showcase their moves and take part in taster sessions.

Older people also got the chance to take part in the Power of Touch event, which involved creating writing sessions and therapy and sensory sessions.
