Stationery store set to close

A LARGE stationery shop is set to close after bosses opted to restructure the business.

Staples, at Hartlepool Marina, has confirmed it will close its doors to customers within weeks as part of the company’s plan to “reshape” the business.

Despite efforts by the Mail, Staples bosses said they could not confirm how many staff had lost their jobs but said some workers would be relocated to other stores where possible.

The Hartlepool store was one of 23 Staples stores across the country set to close down. The company has a total of 134 shops in the UK.

A spokeswoman for the stationary firm said: “The Hartlepool store hasn’t closed yet but will be in the next few weeks.

“I can’t provide information about how many workers will lose their jobs, but where possible staff have been relocated.”

She added: “In September, Staples announced a strategic plan to accelerate growth and better serve the evolving needs of customers.

“As part of this plan, we are reshaping our business in the UK to serve customers who increasingly shop with us online.

“Staples UK will close 23 stores out of 134 stores.

“We are actively working to support associates through this period of change.

“At the same time, Staples is investing in its online channel to provide customers a seamless shopping experience across our websites and retail store network.

“As the world’s second largest internet retailer and leading brand in office products, Staples is committed to making it easy for customers to shop how and when they want.

“In spite of these changes, we are confident we will continue to be our customer’s trusted source for their business’s needs.”

The closure of Staples, which is based on the Highlight Retail Park, off Marina Way, means that there will be two large vacant units with the former TK Maxx store still empty since it closed in January 2009.
