Stolen car narrowly missed PC
A POLICEMAN had to jump out of the path of a stolen car as the thief made his getaway.
Jamie Turner, 21, who had taken a Nissan Micra car, sped off after police tried to get him to stop, narrowly missing one officer.
Turner was joined in the car by his cousin Dwayne Turner, 20, who had got in the vehicle after Jamie had stolen it.
Jamie Turner, who was already disqualified from driving, used a hatchet to break into the car which had been left parked in Bruce Crescent, Hartlepool, on November 9 last year.
Police were called and the vehicle was spotted in the street facing Miers Avenue.
Harry Hadfield, prosecuting at Teesside Crown Court, said: “The officers pulled up as the Micra was being driven away and shouted to the driver to stop.
“He disobeyed and the officer withdrew his baton when the Micra was reversed at speed.
“He managed to strike a window causing it to shatter, but the driver reversed hard.
“Jamie Turner drove off narrowly missing one of the police officers who had to jump out the way. The vehicle made off towards Miers Avenue narrowly missing a lamppost.”
The car was found abandoned a short time later in Skelton Street with a hatchet on the seat.
Dwayne Turner was found hiding in a nearby garden and Jamie Turner was arrested the following morning.
When quizzed by police Jamie admitted taking the car using the hatchet, even boasting he was getting good at it.
Dwayne Turner, 20, said he got in after the car had been taken but knew it was probably stolen.
Jamie Turner, of Enid Gardens, Blackhall, admitted aggravated vehicle taking, driving while disqualified, and having a bladed article.
He already had two suspended prison sentences hanging over him including one for stealing and setting fire to a car also in Bruce Crescent last March.
Paul Cleasby, mitigating, for Jamie Turner said he had had a troubled background and had bouts of depression.
He said the driving was brief and the hatchet was not intended to be used as a weapon.
Jim Withyman, mitigating for Dwayne Turner, who admitted aggravated vehicle taking, said: “He realises he makes poor decisions and if he continues he will spend longer ad longer periods in prison.”
Jamie Turner was jailed for 28 months and banned from driving for another two years.
Dwayne Turner, of Carrick Street, Hartlepool, was jailed for 10 months.
