A SUPPORT group launched to help arthritis sufferers in Hartlepool is on the look-out for volunteers for a forthcoming event.
The Hartlepool Arthritis Research UK (HARK) group was formed earlier this year following an initial meeting at The Grand Hotel, in the town’s Swainson Street.
Now the group – which already has six members but is looking for more – has arranged an event in the town’s Middleton Grange Shopping Centre later this month.
There will be a display manned by volunteers in the town centre giving away free information and advice to people with the painful condition, and to their friends and family members.
Peter Gowland, from Hartlepool Voluntary Development Association (HVDA), a town organisation which has helped launch HARK, said he would love a few volunteers to help out on the day.
He said: “It will be quite a long day and we would be very grateful for more people to come forward.”
He added: “The aim of the day is to raise awareness of the treatment, help and assistance available for people suffering with arthritis.
“It’s also about social support so that local people who suffer know that there is a group available that meets every month in the Coommunity Room at Asda, in Hartlepool.
“It’s a chance to off-load emotionally and get social support.”
Peter also hopes members of the public could give a donation or even a subscription to help the group function financially.
Peter said: “Arthritis can affect people of all ages, including babies.
“It really is a condition that shows no age limit and more should be known about it.”
The group welcomes any new members who would like to join up.
Anyone interested in doing so can pop along to the next arranged meeting on April 15 at 2pm in the Community Room, within Asda, off Marina Way, in Hartlepool. For details ring Peter on (01429) 262641.
