Tesco supermarket staff are set for Hartlepool's Race for Life

Dozens of Tesco workers will swap the supermarket aisle and checkout for the seafront when they take part in this weekend's Race for Life.

More than 40 female workers from Tesco in Burn Road will pull on their running shoes and join hundreds of other women running to fight cancer.

The retailer has been the official Race for Life partner for the last 15 years which raises money for Cancer Research UK.

Many staff members will be running in memory of people who have been affected by cancer including family members and colleagues.

Selina Wilson, Tesco’s community champion, said: “It is very popular in store amongst the girls and always get a really good turnout.

“It is quite resonant this year because we lost another colleague, Sue Blenkinsop, earlier this year to cancer.

“It touched a lot of us because she was such a lovely lady. We have also lost other colleagues in the past.

“But it is a great day as well. It is good to come together to celebrate people’s lives and raise a little bit of money for a good cause as well.”

Among the Tesco team will be first timer Rachel Luckley, 23, a checkout assistant of Hutton Avenue, Hartlepool.

Rachel said: “I know people through my family who have been affected by cancer such as a friend of my gran’s who had breast cancer.

“It is something I have wanted to do for a while and thought it would be god to get involved to try to raise as much money as possible.

“We are all meeting up as a team beforehand and are going to start off as a team.”

Women and girls of all ages can enter Race for Life’s 10k or 5k run which starts from Coronation Drive, Seaton Carew, at 11am on Sunday.

More than 1,00 people have signed up so far, but it is not too late to register.

Entry fees are £14.99 for women who are aged 16 plus. The cost for girls aged from six years to 15, and boys aged 12 or under, is £10.

Last year, a total of 1,230 women completed the course and helped to raise over £65,000 for life-saving research.

Cancer Research UK are hoping to match that total this year, if not beat it.

For girls and boys who are aged under six, entry is free and no registration is needed.

The Mail will be there to capture the emotion, spirit and scale of the event.
