The Seaton tramp who walked his dog

THIS was the face that was seen walking dogs along Seaton beach and speaking to passers-by.

But no one knew that the man often described as a "tramp" who sulked around Seaton sea front, walking on the beach with a limp and a walking stick, was the same John Darwin who had disappeared in March 2002.

It was a disguise which fooled all who had known him – and one which was the face on a new passport under the name of John Jones, which John Darwin used freely to come and go from the UK.

It was only when police released the image after his arrest that the memories of those who had seen and spoken to him began to jog.

Soon officers were inundated with calls and emails from people who believed they had seen and spoken to Darwin.
