The way we were at war

YOUNGSTERS visited a museum to learn about the Second World War.

Pupils from Hartlepool's Jesmond Road Primary School have started a new project called Who Do You Think You are Kidding Mr Hitler? after the theme song for Dad's Army.

Eighty Year 5 and 6 pupils visited the Museum of Hartlepool to get inspiration on how the war affected the town.

Deputy headteacher Paul Martindale said the children made a modern day evacuee suitcase and chose items from a catalogue which they would need or forfeit.

They also looked at maps of Hartlepool and old photographs and learned about wartime food and the 'make do and mend' philosophy.

Mr Martindale said: "It's about putting it into context, 1940 is a long time ago when you are only 10-years-old."

The children have already been visited at their school, in the town's Jesmond Road, by a dance group which has taught them dances which were popular at the time.

These dances, such as the foxtrot, will then feature in the pupils' Black Out Ball in March.

Mr Martindale said the youngsters will get dressed up in 1940s gear for the ball, which is similar to a wartime street party in the school hall with a live band.

They are also due to visit Beamish Museum near Stanley dressed as evacuees and will be making gas masks.
