THREE people have appeared in court charged in connection with an alleged car chase which resulted in a head on crash.

Darren Cooper, 27, of Portrack Lane, Stockton, was brought before Hartlepool Magistrates’ Court in custody the day after the smash in Stockton Road, in Hartlepool, between a blue Mini Cooper and silver Fiat Punto.

Cooper is accused of burglary, theft, aggravated taking of a vehicle without the owner’s consent, driving dangerously, driving while disqualified, failing to stop when required by police, driving without insurance and making off without payment on November 22.

He entered no pleas to the charges and was remanded in custody as the case was sent to Teesside Crown Court to be dealt with on a date to be fixed.

Abigail Noble, of Coleridge Gardens, Darlington, appeared before justices in custody accused of breaching police bail.

The 21-year-old has been released on bail to return to South Durham Magistrates on a date yet to be set.

A 20-year-old Stockton man was also charged with an alleged aggravated taking of vehicle without the owner’s consent charge and handling stolen goods on the same date.

The crash happened around 9.30am on Thursday. The 30-year-old driver of the Punto needing hospital treatment for leg injuries.

Police were forced to close one lane on both sides of the road, near to Truro Drive, for around 90 minutes following the smash.
