Toe-tapping time on the Trincomalee
A HISTORIC ship is being lined up as a new monthly music venue.
For the first time in its 196-year history, HMS Trincomalee is to host live music on the mess deck every month.
And the idea of a four-weekly programme of entertainment is already proving such a hit with bands as the ship is booked up for acts between this month and early 2014.
HMS Trincomalee Trust general manager David McKnight said: “We want to set a standard for quality music.
“In the past, we have had Live At The Trinc events but they have only been about once every six or seven weeks. We are now making them into a monthly music programme.”
Bands lined up include Spanish four-piece folk and rock band Calm Down who will perform in July, Vin Garbutt who has been lined up for next year and Richard Grainger who will be bringing a mix of music and stories.
Mr McKnight added: “We will be bringing a range of genres from World music to Caribbean and Latin American to Eastern bloc.
“There will be quite a lot of folk and folk rock. When we have had events in the past, we have usually sold out and you are talking about 85 people in an intimate venue.
“We are building on the success of the past but we are doing it every month because of public demand. The basic recipe is the same throughout. We want to bring great live music combined with real ale, a wine bar and a light supper.”
Busy times lie ahead for the ship.
Talks will start later this month on how best to celebrate HMS Trincomalee’s landmark 200th anniversary of her launch.
The Royal Navy Leda-class frigate is now a floating tourist attraction in Hartlepool and was first launched on October 12, 1817. She remains the second oldest warship afloat in the world.
