Town gets more speed cameras

TWO more Hartlepool roads are to be targeted by speed cameras - bringing the total number of sites in town to 15.

The new mobile camera sites will be on Elwick Road and King Oswy Drive, which camera bosses say have shown a high proportion of speed-related crashes.

Hartlepool will now have 15 speed camera sites - 14 mobile and one fixed - which is more than Middlesbrough, with eight, and Stockton, with 13.

And speed safety bosses say the new cameras are a result of motorists continuing to drive at excessive speeds.

Mick Bennett, public relations manager for the Cleveland Safety Camera Partnership, said the reason Hartlepool had more camera sites than Middlesbrough or Stockton was simple.

Mr Bennett added: "It is because the speed data is showing up that speed is still a problem in the Hartlepool area. I would encourage people to slow down."

The new camera sites come into operation on Monday.

Mr Bennett said "We have received approval to operate speed detection cameras on these roads by the Department for Transport, due to the high number of injury collisions and their resulting casualties.

"Surveys carried out by the local authority have confirmed there is a problem, with vehicles exceeding the speed limit by a considerable margin."

He reminded drivers that both roads have schools on them and so extra care should be taken.

However, Richard Turner, Hartlepool representative for the Association of British Drivers, said while cameras could be justified near schools, they could not be along the entire stretch of Elwick Road.

He said: "Our contention is the fact that the road, after each junction, has different characteristics.

"The cameras are justified, but should only be put there after, or if, they can't engineer the problem out. It's a broad brush, rather than acknowledging there is one or two areas."

Roads currently targeted are: The Front, in Seaton Carew, Seaton Lane, Easington Road, Coronation Drive, Throston Grange Lane, Powlett Road, Catcote Road, Winterbottom Avenue, Wynyard Road, Raby Road, Oxford Road and Station Lane. There is also a fixed camera site on the A689.
