Town population grows by 2,000

HARTLEPOOL’S population has grown by almost 2,000 in the past 10 years, according to newly-released figures from the 2011 Census.

The town’s population is up by two per cent - to 92,000 in 2011 compared to 90,200 when the survey was last conducted, in 2001.

Hartlepool was the local authority with the fewest people in the North East, according to The Office for National Statistics, which published its first results from the 2011 Census yesterday.

The region saw an increase of inhabitants to 2.6m, compared to 2.5m a decade ago - the smallest UK regional increase at two per cent.

By comparison the population across England and Wales increased by seven per cent to 56.1m, the largest growth in population since census-taking began in 1801.

Sunderland, South Tyneside, Redcar and Cleveland and Middlesbrough, saw decreases, with two to three per cent less people.

County Durham was the largest local authority in the region by population with 513,200 people, an increase of 19,440 (3.9 per cent).

Across England and Wales, there was a 13 per cent increase in the number of children under five years old, with more than 400,000 more people in this age group.

National statistician Jil Matheson said 95 per cent of people responded to the survey and thanked them for providing “valuable information for planners, policy-makers and the public for years to come”.
