TWO senior schools from Hartlepool will be represented in the regional finals of a prestigious competition after impressing judges at a speaking event.
Teams from Manor College of Technology and High Tunstall College of Science have just won the Rotary District Youth Speaks Competition and now go on to the Regional finals in Glasgow later this month.
Manor College’s Intermediate team edged past King’s School Tynemouth and won the Intermediate competition, while High Tunstall’s Senior team just pipped Whitley Bay High School in the district finals of the competition, which were held on Sunday at Durham.
Both teams were winners in Hartlepool Rotary’s competition last November, and now stand a chance to get through to the national finals in Hull at the end of April if they succeed in Glasgow.
Rotary Youth Speaks competitions take the form of presentations by teams of three members – a chairperson, a speaker and a proposer of the vote of thanks.

Teams are free to choose their own topics and a panel of judges awards points and decides on the winner.
Manor College chose “Once upon a time” as their topic and this was professionally delivered by 14-year-old Ben Rutherford.
Alex Hughes, 16, from High Tunstall, gave an excellent presentation on “The degradation of the English language”.
Trophies and certificates were presented by the incoming District Governor for Rotary North East, Dave Sadler.
He praised all of the teams on their presentations, and said: “I find it hard to believe that the presentations this afternoon have been given by people so young. It’s great to see young people achieving such high standards and they must all be congratulated.”
