Town ranked the second cheapest place to live
HARTLEPOOL has been ranked second in a league table of the cheapest places to live.
The average price of a property in the town is 119,577, which is a 2.63 per cent increase on last year's value.
The town came behind North East Lincolnshire in a nationwide survey, where the average cost of a home is 118,373.
Meanwhile, the most expensive place to live is London, where you would have to fork out almost four times as much – a whopping 400,813 to buy a home.
There is a clear north-south divide in the league table, with Windsor and Maidenhead, South Gloucestershire, Surrey, West Berkshire, Hertfordshire, Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Bath and North-East Somerset and Berkshire featuring in the top 10 most expensive places to live.
Behind Hartlepool in the league is North Lincolnshire, where a property would set you back 124,505, followed by Durham, where the average home is 130,612.
East Riding, Nottinghamshire, South Yorkshire, Merseyside, Lancashire and Tyne and Wear are also listed in the top 10 cheapest places.
In contrast to the findings of the survey, carried out by property website Zoopla.co.uk, Hartlepool estate agents Manners and Harrison are marketing a five-bedroom house with a swimming pool in The Grove, Hartlepool, for 1.5m, as well as a five-bedroom home in Hart on the Hill, Dalton Piercy, for 1.35m.
However, at the other end of the scale, the Mail reported last month that the town's Carr Street, which is awaiting demolition, was number nine in a separate survey of the most affordable places to live in North-East England.
A two-bedroomed house in the street, made famous after former EastEnders actor Larry Lamb spent time there filming a documentary about life on the dole, costs just 38,300.
The Zoopla survey found there are nearly 2,000 streets in England where the average property costs more than 1m.
Nick Leeming, commercial director of Zoopla.co.uk, said: "The past 12 months has seen house prices in the leading areas of the country rebound at a far faster rate than the average, contributing to a widening of the north/south divide."
