Town MP declines pay rise
AN MP has renounced his pay rise in the light of difficult financial times.
Hartlepool MP Iain Wright has not accepted his 1,000 basic pay rise or 500 increase in his ministerial salary, saying he felt it would be "wrong" in light of economic times.
He is also urging other high earners in the public sector to follow suit and relinquish their pay increase or bonuses.
He said: "I think in the economic times we have, when people are urging public sector pay restraints, it's wrong of MPs and ministers to say 'do as I say, not as I do'.
"I'm concerned there will be lower- paid workers vital to delivering public services, like teaching assistants, lollipop ladies and social care workers, who may not be getting a pay rise this year.
"I feel uncomfortable taking the pay increase when hard-working public sector workers will not be achieving a similar rate increase."
He added: "I would hope other senior people in the public sector like doctors, NHS managers and dentists, who are all frankly very well-paid from the public sector, would also forego any bonus or pay increase as well."
