Town’s job plight shown on screen
The Fairy Jobmother, Hayley Taylor.
THE difficulties of a homeless teenager and young parents out of work in Hartlepool will be screened to the nation next week.
Cameras were rolling when prime time Channel 4 programme The Fairy Jobmother came to town.
The innovative series opted for Hartlepool at the end of last year after figures revealed that more than 4,000 people were claiming Jobseekers Allowance.
The popular show, featuring the Fairy Jobmother Hayley Taylor, came to town in the hope of finding work for a number of jobless residents.
They include 19-year-old Scott Pounder, who was homeless at the time of the filming, having to rely on his friends for food and shelter.
To make matters worse, Scott had also recently had his benefits stopped.
The programme, which will be shown on Tuesday night, also follows the fortunes of two unemployed young parents who are doing their all to get back into work for the sake of their three-year old daughter.
Hayley worked with the candidates featured in the show for two weeks and tried to instill the skills and motivation required to get back into work.
As part of the show, she helps them with basic CV writing and job hunting skills before lining them up with interviews.
A number of businesses, including the Coffee Rappor Bar, in York Road, Hartlepool, feature in the episode.
At the time of filming, producer Victoria Ray told the Mail that finding a job in Hartlepool in the current economic climate was a “real challenge”.
She said: “Although there are no guarantees that everyone will be offered a job, the idea is to prepare that person for working life and also to leave a lasting impression on the wider community which Hayley visits.”
After a successful first series, the Fairy Jobmother returned to the screens last week.
Victoria added: “We had such a positive response from series one and this series will feel even more relevant following the Government’s announcement of their drastic changes to the benefits system.”
People can find out how the candidates get on on the programme, which goes out on Channel 4 at 9pm on Tuesday, June 14.

Wednesday, June 15, 2011 at 11:30 AMHaving watched The Fairy Jobmother on Channel 4 14062011. One has to say I don’t buy it? The problem is when the camera’s are trained on the applicant you know before the programme finishes they will get the JOB. This is not fair on the other people who were going for that vacancy.
