Trust sets out plans for hospital

HEALTH bosses will set out their plans to return services to the University Hospital of Hartlepool at a meeting this week.

Cardiology, diagnostic urology, endoscopy and orthopaedics and spinal services are all set to be reinstated at the Holdforth Road site.

Representatives from the North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust will outline plans at a meeting of Hartlepool Borough Council’s health scrutiny forum on Thursday, February 9, at 10am.

The Trust’s director of strategic development, Carole Langrick, will be joined by fellow health professionals to outline proposals during the meeting, which will be held at Hartlepool College of Further Education, in Stockton Street.

The meeting has been arranged following calls from Hartlepool councillors for more clarity and public involvement over the provision of services at the University Hospital of Hartlepool, in Holdforth Road.

The Trust has recently indicated that doctors, nurses and managers are looking at a number of services which could be enhanced at the Hartlepool site ahead of the proposed new hospital being built at Wynyard.

These services include:

l cardiology (heart care and treatment);

l diagnostic urology (bladder and urinary tract testing);

l orthopaedics and spinal;

l endoscopy services.

Trust bosses have previously said there is “no question” of reversing the changes made to emergency care last year.

As previously reported, plans to build a multi-million-pound hospital at Wynyard have been hit with a further delay after it emerged that a decision on Government backing is not expected for a further six months.

Trust bosses were expecting to hear about approval for a Private Finance Initiative (PFI) for the £300m site within weeks.

But Chancellor George Osborne is reviewing PFI schemes and a decision will now not be due until July at the earliest.

Labour councillor Stephen-Akers Belcher, who chairs the health scrutiny forum, said: “It is important that we strive to ensure that we have the best possible level of services at the University Hospital of Hartlepool.

“I am sure that all of the scrutiny councillors are looking forward to listening to the proposals put forward by the trust and the opportunity to ask questions.”

Members of the public are welcome to attend the meeting.
