Try out Tai Chi

PEOPLE can learn the skills of a Chinese martial art at weekly sessions.

The White Crane Tai Chi groups runs classes throughout the town, including in Hart Village and at Hartfields Retirement Village.

People of all ages and abilities can take part and those who have never tried Tai Chi before will get a helping hand from expert instructor, Mike Watson.

Regulars are now encouraging residents to kick start the new year by trying out the new skill and going along to the sessions.

White Crane treasurer, Susan Quigley, said: “People can just turn up and take part, there’s no membership.

“It’s a good way to improve fitness and you can do so without getting all sweaty and hot.

“When I first started I had never tried Tai Chi before so I learnt from scratch, it’s very simple to learn and really enjoyable.”

The Chinese martial art is said to harmonise the mind, body and spirit and promote mental and physical wellbeing through fitness and relaxation.

A session takes place at Hart Village Hall, in the village, on a Wednesday from 9.30am-11am and at Hartfields Retirement Village on a Friday from 2pm-3.30pm.

Susan, 64, who lives in Elm Grove, in the town, added: “As well as the fitness benefits, there’s a social aspect to the club as well.

“We’re all good friends now and we enjoy a good chat after the class.

“Mike is a full-time and full qualified instructor and he’s a brilliant teacher for people of all abilities.

“People can come along and see if they enjoy it and if they do come back the next week.”

The group also runs sessions in Hartlepool at Wilton Grange, in Grange Road, and St Teresa’s Church Hall, in Braemer Road.
