AVOIDING the ramp down from Middleton Grange Shopping Centre proved a bridge too far for one van driver.
Shoppers watched yesterday as a silver Mercedes Sprinter smashed into the ramp above as it attempted to drive underneath.
The front of the van was badly damaged, but luckily no-one was injured in the smash. And after carrying out an assessment, a structural engineer said no damage had been caused to the ramp, used by pedestrians to get from the shopping centre to York Road.
The van, which was carrying meat, hit the bridge over the car park at around 3.10pm yesterday. Police officers were called and stayed until the vehicle was towed away.
A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: “We were called after a silver Mercedes Sprinter van crashed into the bridge above. The structural engineer said no damage was caused to the ramp.”
Meanwhile, a motorist had a lucky escape after her car overturned and smashed into two parked vehicles.
The driver of the blue Renault Clio, a woman in her 30s, was taken to hospital for a check-up after the smash but a North East Ambulance Service spokeswoman said the injuries weren’t life threatening. The car smashed into a black Volvo estate and a blue Ford Fiesta in Winterbottom Avenue at around 3.10pm yesterday.
