Vicious random attack on couple
A WOMAN who needed plastic surgery after being viciously attacked while walking home with her husband is now too scared to leave her own house.
The 31-year-old woman also needed 15 stitches to her face after she and her husband were victims of an unprovoked attack in
Waldon Street, Hartlepool.
Medics initially feared the three deep cuts she suffered had caused nerve damage to the left side of her face, but they are hopeful she will make a good recovery.
Police are now appealing for help in catching those responsible for the sickening incident.
Her 32-year-old husband, who suffered a bruised left eye and scrapes to his face, does not wish to be identified.
But he told the Mail: "We can't remember anything. It was just a random attack.
"We were walking along to get a taxi after having had a few drinks and then all I remember is coming around.
"I'd been knocked out and my wife's face was covered in blood. I didn't know what had happened.
"My wife is very shaken. She's only been out of the house for five minutes since it happened and then she wasn't very comfortable.
"Hopefully there won't be any long-term damage."
The couple, from the King Oswy area of town, had been having a Bank Holiday weekend drink in The Causeway pub, in Stranton, and left just after 8pm on Sunday, August 29.
They walked to Waldon Street, near the new One Life medical centre, and were heading to Park Road to get a taxi when they were set upon at around 8.30pm.
The male victim said: "I can't even say what they looked like or how many of them there were. I just don't know.
"Two women stopped in a car to help. They put a towel against my wife's face to soak up the blood because it was pouring. They phoned an ambulance and the paramedics arrived.
"I hadn't seen a single soul in the street. Nothing had led up to it.
"We had our money and cards and mobile phones
with us, but we still have them all. It was just completely random.
"We're still just both shaken and in shock about it. I just can't understand why it happened and why it was us."
The couple were taken to the University Hospital of North Tees, in Stockton, and received more than five hours treatment before moving on to see specialists at James Cook University Hospital.
They spent all day Wednesday at the Middlesbrough hospital as his wife underwent surgery to close the wounds.
Anyone who has information or witnessed the attack is asked to contact Pc Mark Allan, of Hartlepool Police, on (01642) 302178 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
