They included firefighers from Hartlepool’s Stranton station, Billingham and as far away as Middlesbrough.

It was intially thought the blaze, on the Tofts Farm Industrial Estate (East), near to the Mayfair Centre, Seaton Carew, had been triggered by a coal heap igniting.

It later emerged that the substance alight was actually foam rubber.

The fire started at around 11.20am today and was eventually put out at 2.18pm.

Two crews remained on site afterwards as a precaution.

Misha Snowball, from the Owton Manor area of Hartlepool, sent us this video of thick black smoke spreading across the coast.
