YOUNGSTERS are hoping to become world record holders after taking part in a musical event.
Pupils from Glendene Arts Academy, in Crawlaw Road, Easington Colliery, joined other schools from around the UK in a world record attempt for the most people signing and singing at the same time.
The current record stands at 13,418 people, but more than 90,000 people pledged to take part nationwide.
All of the school’s 181 pupils took part in the event, singing and signing a song specially commissioned for the event by SignHealth, a charity set up to help with the needs of deaf people in the community focusing on mental and physical healthcare.
Glendene has two signing choirs which meet every week.
They promote both singing and signing in a fun and practical way which is accessible for everyone.
During the event, the three choirs performed together, along with thousands of other children around the country.
In addition to the record breaking attempt, each participating pupil donated £1 to raise much-needed funds and awareness for deaf children around the country.
Every pound raised from the event will go towards helping SignHealth to transform the lives of vulnerable deaf children and adults.
Academy principal Eric Baker said: “It was a great event involving staff, parents and children. We hope we’ve helped to break the record.”
