SCORES of football fans from East Durham have set off for Wembley as cup final excitement reaches fever pitch.

More than 100 Sunderland supporters from Easington and surrounding villages are making the journey this weekend for the Capital One clash against Premier League favourites Manchester City.

Martin Dunn, 23, of Easington Village, is travelling down by car today with his family, including parents Michael and Nora, brother James, and aunties and uncles.

The Barclays bank worker said: “I can’t wait. It is a once in a generation thing. Going to the new Wembley stadium and watching my team walk out is going to be absolutely amazing. We’ve got a chance in 90 minutes to win a trophy and make history.”

Martin reckons anything can happen despite the tough opposition.

He added: “A lot depends on which team turns up for Sunderland. If it’s the same one that played Manchester United in second leg of the semi-final they have a chance.

“You never know, they could make a mistake or there could be a bit of brilliance from Adam Johnson and we could win it.

“But if they play like they did against Arsenal last weekend they could get embarrassed again.”

Dozens of supporters from the Easington supporters branch will travel by coach today and also tomorrow.

John Davin, of the branch, said: “I think well over a hundred will be going just from Easington alone.

“I know quite a few are going without tickets hoping to get one on the day.

“It was 1992 since we were last in a cup final so it is something special.

“I just hope they perform on the day and hope they do it for us.”

Hundreds are also set to pack out the pubs and clubs of East Durham to watch the game on TV on Sunday afternoon.
