VIPs visit local organisations
LORD Mandelson and Jeff Stelling took advantage of their return "home" to call into local organisations to meet volunteers.
Lord Mandelson called into the Belle Vue Community Sports and Youth Centre to see the work being done by staff at the Kendal Road venue, which is celebrating its 25th birthday. He also met workers from the Owton Fens Community Association (OFCA) which also reached its 25-year milestone.
During his visit he caught up with Alex Sedgwick, the centre's development manager, and Kevin Cranney, of OFCA, plus a number of staff, volunteers and centre users.
Lord Mandelson also met up with Rose Simpson, of the Belle Vue area, who uses the centre every day.
The 79-year-old said: "Lord Mandelson remembered me from his time as MP when he used to visit the centre and it was lovely to see him again. He thoroughly deserves his honour."
The former Hartlepool MP also called into the new health centre in Park Road as well as the youth centre at Cafe One77, in York Road.
Jeff, meanwhile, called into the RNLI headquarters, in Ferry Road, to meet and greet lifeboat volunteers and throw his weight behind their annual golf fundraising event which takes place at Seaton Carew Golf Club in May.
Jeff, who was given a ride on the lifeboat around the harbour, said: "The golf tournament is a great event that will hopefully raise a lot of money for a very worthy cause."
Mike Craddy, lifeboat operations manager, said: "The golf tournament is one of our main fundraisers and all of the money that we raise goes towards the costs of running the station."
For more tickets and information about the golf tournament call Eddie Atkinson, lifeboat treasurer, on (01429) 264796.
