REGENERATION chiefs have hit out at flytippers who are blighting an area of beauty on a stretch of coastline at Horden.
Members of Horden Regeneration Partnership have joined forces with the Durham Heritage Coast Partnership to warn that the dumping of rubbish in the area near Limekiln Gill will not be tolerated.
June Clark, regeneration partnership chairwoman, who is also a member of Horden Parish Council, has met with Niall Benson, Durham Heritage Coast Officer on the coastal footpath nearby.
Their message is: “Enjoy the views, but leave nothing but your footprints”.
A warning is also being issued to visitors who go to enjoy the coast but do not take their rubbish home with them.
Coun Clark and Mr Benson have highlighted the particular stretch of beach as an area of beauty, enjoyed by many, especially since the £10m Turning The Tide project, which transformed the beach from an area once tarred by decades of coalmining.
Coun Clark said: “The beach is a wonderful resource we have on our doorstep to enjoy some free exercise, with stunning views along the Heritage Coast Footpath at Horden.
“With several access points along the length of the village it is an ideal free place to get out and enjoy, blow away any cobwebs and get that ‘feel good factor’ that fresh air and exercise brings.
“I’m sure Niall will agree with me though in urging anyone coming to take their litter home with them.”
Coun Clark also reminded would-be fly-tippers that the access roads to the beach are well monitored by walkers and members of Horden Regeneration Partnership.
She said: “Walkers and members will be looking to report any suspicious activity to the authorities.”
Mr Benson added: “The work we did there a few years ago, creating footpaths, paid dividends.
“But we still get the odd fly-tipper, especially in the darker nights, and we want people to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity.”
Horden Regeneration Partnership members acted as consultees on the phases of the Heritage Coast footpath developments at Horden .
The partnership also has other schemes in the pipeline, including the planned rail halt in the village.
The next meeting of the regeneration Partnershipwill be held at Horden Social Welfare Centre, in Seventh Street, from 6pm, on Tuesday, January 15.
