Where the axe will fall

DOZENS of people are set to lose their jobs after councillors backed budget cuts.

Hartlepool Borough Council is cutting £5.3m from its three departments with 42 redundancies and the possibility of a further 12.

Senior officers say they have looked to restructure services and contracts as much as possible to reduce job losses.

The child and adult services department is cutting £2.7m with £128,000 from children’s education services and £408,000 from the prevention, safeguarding and specialist services division by reviewing and renegotiating contracts and a review of the management structure.

The community services budget - which includes cultural services, libraries and sport and recreation - is being slashed by £298,000.

The bulk of the savings will come from the adult and social care service, which is cutting £1.6m, by decommissioning some low priority services, reviewing contracts and re-tendering and not filling vacant posts and deleting others.

Cabinet also provisionally agreed to axe £125,000 of funding for free buses to and from faith schools, which would affect 340 pupils at English Martyrs School and Sixth Form College, in Catcote Road.

That is still subject to consultation with the results being published in March.

The money would have to be found from elsewhere if it was agreed to not axe the funding after the consultation.

The regeneration and neighbourhood department is cutting a total of £1.9m, with £524,000 from its traffic budget, £584,000 from management of housing and public protection and £90,000 from neighbourhood management.

Also, £50,000 is to be cut from community safety and £90,000 from waste management.

The chief executive’s department is cutting £663,000.

The final proposals will go before full council on Thursday at 7pm at the Civic Centre.
