Wind traps baby in car

A FRANTIC new mum had to call the fire brigade out after a freak gust of wind left her young baby locked inside her car.

Despite the developing drama, the gurgling youngster quietly sat through the ordeal.

The woman called Peterlee Fire Station to say she had accidentally locked her three-month-old baby inside her car.

Neighbours of the woman, in Byron Street, Easington Colliery, say she was about to set off for the shops when a gust of wind blew the door of her red Nissan Micra shut.

The baby boy was in his car seat in the back of the car and fire chiefs say although he was in the car for around 20 minutes, he was unnerved by the drama going on around him when they turned up to rescue him.

Adrian Emberson, crew manager at Peterlee Fire Station, said: "The mam had accidentally locked the car with the baby inside.

"The baby was about three-months-old. The door had shut and deadlocked on her. She could see the keys on the driver's seat.

"We spent 20 minutes at the scene and had to smash the driver's side window furthest away from the baby.

"The mother was really concerned about the baby but mother and child were soon reunited.

"The baby was fine and kept calm, but he was glad to see his mam."

A neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said: "The little boy wasn't in the car for long.

"The firefighters got him out and he was fine.

"The mother was going to the shop and the wind just shut the door."

The incident happened around 10.15am yesterday and the baby was reported to be unhurt.
