Wind turbines plan defeated
CAMPAIGNERS were celebrating after a controversial wind farm plan was rejected.
Electricity supplier EDF Energy has been told it cannot build four 216ft wind turbines on land at Southern Law Farm, west of Trimdon Grange.
The plan was the first of a number of wind farm proposals in east Durham to be heard by a planning authority and has been heralded as a victory by objectors.
At a meeting of Durham City Council's development control committee, councillors voted against officer recommendations and threw out the plan by 10 votes to five.
Councillors heard the site for the proposed turbines was 2,000ft away from people's homes in Trimdon Grange.
David Smith, chairman of campaign group Trimdon Area Action Wind Turbines, said the plan could affect people's health, could cause subsidence and will have a visual impact on the area.
He said: "The area is surrounded by five villages and thousands of people will be affected.
"If this goes ahead it will set a precedent to build them in other areas and it could be in one of your villages and not just ours."
The meeting heard research in Holland found turbines should not be built within 1.2 miles of people's homes to ensure their safety.
Sixty-six letters, including letters from two Trimdon Grange businesses feeling the construction would affect them, and a petition containing 25 signatures, were handed to the council to object to the plan.
