FATAL: The wreckage after the crash on the A19 near Dalton Piercy

A SMASH victim who was airlifted to hospital after a collision that closed the A19 at Hartlepool for six hours on Friday has died.

The woman, who was 36 and from Edinburgh, in Scotland, was driving a Renault Clio when the incident happened around 4.30pm on Friday on the A19 northbound carriageway at the junction with Dalton Piercy.

The woman suffered severe injuries and was taken to James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough, where she sadly passed away on Saturday.

The incident also involved a black BMW M5 and its 45-year-old male driver suffered internal injuries and an injury to his ankle, for which he was taken for treatment at the University Hospital of North Tees, in Stockton.

Police would like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or anyone who was present at the scene who has not already spoken to officers.
