CONSTRUCTION work on building 30 new houses on the site of a former library is well under way.

Developers Persimmon Homes are building the three and four-bedroom houses on the site of the former Foggy Furze Library, in Stockton Road, Hartlepool, with the work expected to be completed within two years.

Drainage work has been carried out in recent months while work on the foundations and the new houses is also well on the way. Developers say they hope to “bring back the sense of community” that the library created.

Neil Foster, managing director of Persimmon Homes Teesside, said: “We were delighted to be given planning permission to rejuvenate this site, and even more thrilled that we now have the chance to make a huge difference in this area.

“There is such a great community spirit within Hartlepool and we cannot wait for our development at Foggy Furze to be a part of that.

“We aim to provide a mix of houses to meet the needs of the people within the area and believe the new development will not only appeal to first-time buyers, but also to growing families and older couples looking to downsize.”

The council-run library was closed in 2011 as a result of budget cuts and the building was flattened to make way for a housing development.

The new estate will include 30 houses on the 0.785 hectare site, including 19 three-bed houses and 11 four-bed houses.

Due to the council budget cuts the library, which served the community for 60 years, closed at the end of March 2011, to save the local authority £47,536 a year.

The site is next to the Greenside pub, in Stockton Road, and the St Aidan’s Primary School, in Loyalty Road.

A number of the new homes will be classed as “affordable homes” according to Persimmon Homes.

Meanwhile, officials say the first few the first few plots will be released this weekend from Persimmon’s Seaton Sands development, in Tees Road, Hartlepool.

People will have the chance to buy off plan and take a look around the development’s properties that will mirror those being built on the former Foggy Furze library site.
