Worker fleeced bosses out of £9,300

A CLEANER fleeced building bosses of £9,300 by using the firm's computer to refund cash on to his own bank card.

Trevor Hallcup, 25 man waited until admin staff at Cemex had gone home before accessing account details.

On four occasions he siphoned off money which went straight to his bank.

But his scam was uncovered and he is now facing jail after admitting four counts of fraud at Teesside Crown Court.

Prosecuting, Christopher Attwooll said: "The firm has an administration office in Camden House, at Clearwater Park, in Thornaby.

"It handled customers' payments and refunds, usually by credit or debit card.

"Cemex installed a streamline card terminal.

"This defendant was employed as a cleaner but he managed to use his card and credited his own bank account on four different occasions with about 9,000."

Hallcup, a married father, admitted refunding himself to two lots of 1,000, followed by sums of 3,200 and 4,100.

Victoria Lamballe, defending, asked for sentencing to be adjourned so background reports could be carried about on her client.

The court heard he could be jailed as the fraud put him in breach of a suspended sentence for another offence of dishonesty.

Recorder Neil Davey QC said: "You having pleaded guilty to these charges will be sentenced in respect of them on August 13.

"All sentencing options are open, including custody."

At around the same time Hallcup was committing the fraud in February last year he appeared in the Mail after being involved in a car crash on Raby Road, Hartlepool when he was thrown 60ft in the air.

He told how he felt lucky to be alive after walking away from the crash without any major injuries.

Then in May last year, he featured in the Mail again when his boiler broke down leaving him and his family without heat and hot water for four days.

Hallcup, of Chepstow Walk, Hartlepool, was granted bail and will be sentenced next month.
