Yob spat at police officers

A YOB spat at police officers after being arrested for being drunk and disorderly.

Leon Robinson, 21, was out drinking in Church Street, Hartlepool, when he started being abusive outside of Shades pub.

He was spoken to by police, but he swore at them and told them he was doing nothing wrong.

Officers issued him with a direction to leave order – banning him from returning to the area for 48 hours – but he was later seen in a Church Street takeaway.

When Robinson was arrested he spat in the face of one officer and was then loaded into the back of a police van. However, as the officer did so, Robinson wrapped his legs around the policeman's shoulders.

When he arrived at the Avenue Road police station he then spat at and hit another officer in the arm.

Prosecutor Lilian Atkinson told Hartlepool Magistrates Court on Monday: "This defendant was being abusive in Church Street and when he was spoken to by officers he swore at them.

"He was issued with a direction to leave order and was directed not to return for 48 hours.

"A few hours later, at 3.15am, CCTV cameras picked up that he had returned to Church Street. Officers found him in a takeaway shop and escorted him from the premises and arrested him.

"He had to be forcibly handcuffed due to his conduct and then spat directly into one sergeant's face before wrapping his legs around his shoulders.

"He was taken to the police station and when he was in the holding area he spat at another police constable catching him on the forearm.

"When he was spoken to he claimed to have no recollection of the incident."

She added: "he does have previous convictions for drunk and disorderly."

Robinson, of Caithness Road, Hartlepool, pleaded guilty to assaulting two police officers in the execution of their duty and failing to comply with a direction to leave order, on August 7.

His solicitor, Stuart Haywood, did not say anything on his client's behalf as chairman of the bench Geoffrey Morley asked the probation service to prepare a pre-sentence report.

The case was adjourned until August 23.
