After others realised what had happened, he ended up with almost as much chocolate as he could eat.

A spokesman for Hartlepool Council said: “The crossing patrol officer at Jesmond Gardens Primary School received a Christmas present on Thursday and placed it on the fence nearby, but unfortunately it went missing.

“This was reported on Facebook, and on Friday he received seven carrier bags full of presents from children and parents.

“The gentleman thanks people for their wonderful generosity, but has appealed for no more gifts as he said there is only so much chocolate he can eat.
