WE’RE a romantic bunch here in Hartlepool.

Valentine’s Day is once again upon us and infatuated couples have been hitting the shops and playing the role of Cupid to show their loved ones how much they care.

After Christmas it is the second busiest time of the year for card shops as loved-up individuals spend their hard-earned cash on cards, teddy bears and chocolates.

Fran Harrison, assistant manager at Clinton Cards, in Middleton Grange Shopping Centre, said there has been a constant flow of customers in recent weeks.

Fran said: “I’ve worked here for 10 years, and people in Hartlepool are very romantic.

“We have sold over 300 of one of our teddy bears in just two weeks.

“One man came in and spent £180 last week, you name it, he bought it.”

Lovebirds were spoilt for choice when choosing their Valentine’s Day gift.

Teddy bears of all sizes, CDs packed with love songs and wind-up musical cards priced at £20 were all flying off the shelves.

Fran added: “The Tatty Teddy range seems to be the most popular.

“Every year they sell well.

“But there is just so much choice these days and people do spend a lot of money on their Valentine.

“The last weekend before Valentine’s Day is always incredibly busy.

“And it always tends to be a very mixed gender, I don’t think men spend particularly more than women or vice-versa.”
