A MOTORIST had a lucky escape after his car ploughed into a tree.
Emergency services rushed to the A689 near to Newton Bewley after receiving reports of the smash involving a silver Astra.
The road was closed in both directions after the crash just before 11pm on Saturday and re-opened at around 2.30am.
Paramedics attended and the driver of the car was taken to the University Hospital of North Tees, but luckily avoided serious injury.
Two fire appliances from Stranton and one from Billingham were also called but were not required when they arrived.
One appliance from Stranton did go back to the scene, however, to clean the road surface before the road was re-opened.
A Cleveland Police spokesman said: “We were called to the A689 after receiving reports of a crash where a vehicle had hit a tree.
“The driver of the car was taken to hospital with a suspected broken arm.”
