A REVELLER who glassed a man he claimed was intimidating him has been locked up for two years.
John Robinson lashed out at Daniel Winspear by hitting him in the head with the glass which smashed before following it up with several punches.
Mr Winspear was originally kept in intensive care in hospital due to his injuries.
Teesside Crown Court heard how the victim, who suffered numerous cuts to his head, and a group of other men had gone to Robinson’s house and spent several hours drinking.
The following day they all went to the Headland including Robinson and his brother.
Robinson, 32, told police the men had effectively taken over his house and he tried to get away from them on the Headland but Winspear followed him to another pub.
Rachel Masters, prosecuting, said the victim had been drinking for around 12 hours when Robinson attacked him with the glass.
She said: “His last recollection is being at a pub when he was attacked.
“The next thing he was aware of is being in North Tees hospital.
“A witness inside the pub described looking outside the front window.
“He saw the complainant and could see glass flying around his head.
“He went outside and saw a male punching the complainant and an altercation was ongoing.”
Robinson, of West View Road, Hartlepool, pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm with intent.
In a basis of plea Robinson said: “I realise what I did was wrong and should have just run away.
“I greatly regret my actions, it was totally out of character. I just panicked.”
Jim Withyman, mitigating, said Robinson had no previous convictions for violence and appealed to the judge to suspend the sentence.
He said: “One wonders what on earth could have happened on this day that caused effectively a timid, quiet man to have done what he did.
“It’s quite clear there was some intimidation of the defendant going on. What he then did was completely unacceptable.”
Sentencing, Recorder Henry Prosser said: “It is a serious matter. It has been argued that I should suspend the sentence but for this particular offence I don’t think I have any alternative.
“I’m afriad prison has to be immediate.”
