A MAN was stabbed in the back during a mass street brawl in the early hours.
Detectives at Hartlepool CID are investigating an incident that has been described as an “absolute melee” in Frederic Street, on the town’s Headland.
A 32-year-old man was stabbed in the back in the brawl, which also saw five people arrested.
Police say a number of people, who had been drinking, were in the street at the time and the fracas only came to an end when officers arrived. Five men, aged from their 20s to 40s were arrested and bailed.
The victim was taken to One Life Hartlepool, in Park Road, for treatment before being released.
Detective Sergeant Steve Rowland, of Hartlepool CID, said further arrests could come following the incident, which took place around 1am on Monday.
Det Sgt Rowland said: “We are at the very early stages of the investigation, but it was an absolute melee.
“It finished when the police arrived. “We are trying to build a picture of what happened.
“There has been at least five people involved, but there may be other people and there may be further arrests.”
Det Sgt Rowland said the victim had suffered a minor stab wound after being stabbed in the upper back and added that the people present had been “under the influence of alcohol”.
A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: “Police were called to an incident involving a number of people on Frederic Street in Hartlepool at around 1am on Monday, January 2.
“A 32-year-old man suffered a minor stab wound and was taken to the One Life Centre for treatment. He was later released.
“Five men, their ages ranging from late 20s to 40s, have been arrested on suspicion of assault and are currently on bail pending further enquiries.”
