THE case of a man accused of possession of cannabis could not progress because he was too drunk.

John Raymond Cann attended Hartlepool Magistrates’ Court yesterday but did not enter the courtroom and face justices due to his intoxicated state.

The 50-year-old, charged with possession of cannabis on April 4, could “barely string a sentence together”, said his solicitor Alison Banks.

She told the court: “He’s complaining about feeling ill and he’s clearly intoxicated and I have concerns that you wouldn’t be able to understand a word he’s saying.

“I would also worry about him falling down the stairs into court, he can hardly walk.

“I’d appreciate it if you would adjourn so he can return in a more sober state.”

Chairman of the bench Peter Yuill agreed with the defence solicitor’s request and ordered Cann, of Whitby Walk, Hartlepool, to return to court on Thursday.
