DELIGHTED mediums Peter Crawford and Irene Wilson could be a step away from picking up an honour - for the way they have supported charity while doing their shows.

Peter, 43, and Irene, 70, have taken to the stage for more than 22 years together since they first met at a function.

But in the years since, they have raised money for causes including the Great North Air Ambulance, Macmillan Cancer, and Hartlepool & District Hospice. They have also backed survivors of earthquakes and tsunamis and their big-hearted generosity has not gone unnoticed. Their loving followers have nominated them for a Pride of Hartlepool award.

Their generosity was even noticed in Australia. Lynne Goodwin, from Merriwa in Western Australia, said: “They are doing a splendid job to help the local community.

“I’m a Hartlepudlian living in Australia but I still get back over to the town and cast my eye to it to see how its going. With the likes of Peter and Irene, it is in safe hands.”

News that they had been put forward for an award left the mediums stunned.

But Peter, from the West park area of Hartlepool, said: “It is not what we do it for. We are here to hopefully give people some comfort.”

Irene, who comes from Horden and also runs a clothing alteration store there, said: “We are mediums who work with spirit. We have sceptics but we also have followers and we also raise money for worthy causes. It must be about £70,000 in the last 12 years.”

She added: “It would be nice to win but it would also be just as nice to see someone else win this award. It is lovely that someone has put us forward though.”

Ten categories up for grabs in this year’s awards.

They are Sporting Achievement; Community Group; Community Champion; Student of the Year; Fundraiser of the Year; Child of Courage; Local Hero; Green Champion; Emergency Services and Young Performer of the Year.

You have until early March to put forward your favourites and we want to make this a record year for entry numbers. Make sure you fill in the nomination form in the Hartlepool Mail, or visit www.hartlepool.mail.co.uk and complete the online form
