A HARTLEPOOL woman has unveiled a new dance and theatre arts school.
Michelle Brown, 29, has already taken on 18 students within the first few weeks of unveiling her new business called Michelle Brown Academy of Dance and Theatre Arts within The Studio in Tower Street in Hartlepool.
She told Dance Fever: “I have students who are aged from three to 12. We do everything from dancing lessons to microphone techniques. We also do musical theatre. We get the students to perform on the stage with full lighting and rigs.”
Michelle was a professional singer and dancer herself and went to the Liverpool Institute For Performing Arts, based in Paul McCartney’s old school.
She followed that up with work on Broadway and then came home to Hartlepool to teach in another dance school. Now, though, she has her own academy and said: “I want to create as much as I can for children who can not afford to go to stage school. Everything that we have here is everything that you need for a performing arts centre.”
So far, said Michelle, the academy is “going really well”. She added: “We decided to put on a Christmas concert. We expected to sell about 40 or 50 tickets but we have sold 120 and the place will be full.”
The MBA Christmas concert will be held on Saturday, December 21 at The Studio.
Michelle, whose partner is 28-year-old professional singer Paul Skerritt, has enjoyed success herself in the past. She reached the live regional finals of the UK Open Mic competition in 2012. She wowed judges with her rendition of No-one But You, from the musical We Will Rock You.
Now, she wants to pass on her talents and said: “I really want the business to take off and offer my students as many opportunities as I can.”
