MOTORBIKE yobs wrecked part of a golf club after riding over its course on their machines
Club officials discovered mindless vandals had damaged to the 14th green of Hartlepool Golf Club in a night-time attack.
The club says it is the latest in a series of anti-social crimes to have hit the site in recent months.
Police are investigating and the green had to be closed to members while the damage is repaired.
Graham Laidlaw, the club’s manager and professional, said: “It’s very disappointing that this still happens in this day and age and we try to do all we can to prevent things like this.
“We have reported it to police.
“It’s hard to tell how many motorbikes did it. There could have been two because there is quite a bit of damage.
“With it being a green it is quite an important area of the course.”
The green has been closed and a temporary one opened while greenkeepers work to repair the damage by planting new seed.
The motorbike riders invaded the 18-hole course off Speeding Drive, Hartlepool, overnight last Thursday.
Mr Laidlaw added: “We thought this sort of problem had disappeared, but we’ve had a spate of things lately.
“Someone pinched some stuff out of a compound and the greenkeepers’ shed and we had a break-in of another compound where they took batteries out of the golf buggies.”
Hartlepool Golf Club, in the King Oswy area of town, was the course where town champion Graeme Storm first developed his passion and skill for the game.
