WHEN generous musician Kev McGuire pledged to do all he could in support of a young cancer sufferer he had no idea it would result in him sharing a stage with Paul Weller.
But that is exactly what is going to happen next week.
Kev, 46, a member of popular band the Style Selektors, joined the ever-growing list of supporters of schoolboy Josh Dawson, who is fighting a brain tumour.
Kev sent emails and made phone calls as he looked at ways to help raise cash and help the Holy Trinity Primary School pupil live his dream with trips-of-a-lifetime.
But he couldn’t believe his luck when he received a call from Paul Weller’s secretary, inviting him to go and perform with the Modfather himself next Wednesday!
He is now just days away from sharing the famous stage at the Hammersmith Apollo with one of the most influential British musicians of all time.
“I was thinking of ways to try and raise awareness of what we are doing and trying to raise cash and got in touch with Paul’s record company,” explained, Kev, who works as a resuscitation officer at South Tyneside Hospital and is a dad of Tom, 14, and Annie, five,
“Then when I was at work I got a call from his secretary saying that he was upset that a young lad was having to go through what Josh is right now and that he wanted to help out. So he invited me to go down and play with him next week and I have got to raise as much as I can before then.”
Kev, who is from Hartlepool but now lives in Hartburn, said he isn’t exactly sure how it will work next week, but says he thinks he will play “a couple of numbers” with the superstar.
“It’s going to be cool,” he added.
“I’ve been listening to him since 1977 so to play alongside him is going to be something else.”
Since finding out about the once-in-a-lifetime chance, hundreds of pounds has already been pledged to Kev which will all go to supporting Josh.
More than £12,000 has already flooded in as kindhearted residents do their bit to support Josh. People can support the youngster by visiting www.joshdawson.co.uk.
Kev has asked if everyone who has sponsored him to play alongside Paul Weller can also email him at email@example.com so he can tell the Modfather how much he has helped to raise.
