A TOWN band have secured a spot supporting indie legends The Charlatans – the latest in a string of impressive gigs on a nationwide tour.
Seven-piece collective The Jar Family have already supported established names such as Alabama 3, Ocean Colour Scene’s Steve Craddock and Mik Whitnall as well as Drew McConnell, from Babyshambles ,in what has been a hugely impressive past six months.
And the lads will add another string to their bow when they take to the stage at Communion Unplugged festival, in Newcastle this week, shortly before Tim Burgess and Mark Collins, of The Charlatans, whose 11 studio albums have all peaked in the top 40 in the UK Albums chart, perform an acoustic set.
The event will take place at Hoults Yard, in the city, this Saturday, the day before the Jar Family head home to Hartlepool to play a slot at Pitch Invasion, the festival at Hartlepool United’s Victoria Park organised by creative charity Red Dreams.
The gigs come at an exciting time for the Jar Family.
The band, made up of Hartlepool lads Al Devon, Max Bianco, Richie Docherty, Chris Hooks and “Dali” as well as former Squeeze bassist Keith Wilkinson and percussionist Kez Edwards, are in the middle of a tour throughout the UK with gigs and festivals booked as far in advance as September.
Al Devon, vocals and guitar in the band, said: “Since our first tour with Alabama 3, it’s really kicked off for us.
“Our name has been mentioned a lot and we have had some good reviews.
“We have 24 gigs booked at the minute and more are coming in every other day.
“It’s hard work, but we are all really enjoying it.”
The town members of the Jar Family are well known to music fans in Hartlepool as for many years they played as solo artists at venues around the town before deciding to bring their sound together.
To add to their popularity, their song, Poolie Strut, which has attracted more than 13,000 views on YouTube, is played before Hartlepool United’s home games at Victoria Park.
The Jar Family’s next single, Broken Minded, will be released on Monday, May 21, around a month before the band will release their debut album, The Jar Family Album, on Monday, June 25.
