A TWO-DAY music event is being held to boost the fight against bowel cancer.

Music v Cancer uses the power of music and the support of global stars including Peter Gabriel, Sting and Mark Knopfler to raise awareness of what is the UK’s second biggest cancer killer.

The charity, which was set up by Hartlepool man Tony Larkin after he was diagnosed with the illness in September 2009, regularly hosts Live Sessions where stars from across the music spectrum perform.

And after seeing the popularity of the events continue to rise, Tony decided to double up and organise Music v Cancer’s first Weekender gig, for which tickets are now on sale.

Tony said: “The last Live Sessions event we held proved so popular with more than 150 of the 180 tickets sold in just two days. So we thought it was the right time to go bigger and host a two-day music event which we are really excited about. It’s going to be cracking and we’ve got a fantastic line-up confirmed for both nights too.”

The MvC Weekender Live Sessions are on Friday and Saturday, April 5 and 6, at the Grand Hotel, in Hartlepool. Confirmed artists include Jack Savoretti, who this March is touring with Jake Bugg, Al Lewis, Jonny The Firth and Hayley Gafternick, who will perform on the opening night, while on the second night Chris Helme, James Craise and Liz Lawrence will all take to the stage.

Tony, who has now been given the all-clear from bowel cancer, added: “I’m so pleased that we’ve been able to secure such a fantastic line-up and I think there’ll be many people who come to both nights.

“It’s great that we’re able to use the power of music, both through our Live Sessions and the auctions and raffles of music memorabilia we organise, to raise awareness of bowel cancer.

“It’s the UK’s second biggest cancer killer but it shouldn’t be as it’s very treatable, particularly if it’s diagnosed early.”

The major sponsor of the MvC Weekender Live Sessions is Total Recycling Services while other sponsors include Attco, BSS Plumbing and Heating, Hattersley, Gowler Projects, Van Dalen Recycling and Phoenix Steel plus co-sponsors Publicity Seekers and The Code Whisperer.

Tickets for each night are priced £15 and can be purchased by calling the Grand Hotel on (01429) 266345 or emailing: tony@musicvcancer.com
