THEY have laced up their trainers, pulled on their kit and got their bat, balls, gloves and boots ready – Mickey and his friends are venturing into the world of sport.

And youngsters in Hartlepool can join them when the latest title in Disney’s Wonderful World of Knowledge is released tomorrow.

From Muhammad Ali to Brian Lara, football to motocross, the colourful book, beautifully presented by the ever-present Disney characters, is a stunning encyclopedia of all things sport.

Sports stars in the making can turn back time to 776 BC and find out about the very first Olympic Games.

And with just a few turns of the pages will find themselves escorted back to recent times and some of the best sporting performances known to man.

Which Italian goalkeeper did not concede a goal in international play for two years?

How many consecutive strikes did the American tenpin bowling team score in a match in 1976?

It’s all there in the latest book – as is a host of even quirkier facts.

People can find out why sumo-wrestlers clap their hands before they go into battle, how fast ice hockey players skate and the average speed of the winning racing car.

And the very basic facts are there too.

The positions on a football field, the rules of rugby and the scoring system in cricket.

Budding young sports men and women in the town can find out the lot.

And ahead of the release, one of Hartlepool’s established sporting stars got a sneak preview at what’s on offer.

Amanda Coulson has won a number of national and international medals since she first pulled on her boxing gloves at just 14.

She said: “It’s brilliant for youngsters to get the chance to find out about so many different sports.

“The book is full of colour and facts.”

The magical book is available for just £2.99 with tokens available in your Hartlepool Mail.

The vouchers can then be exchanged for the book at various outlets throughout the town.

The 57-page title marks the halfway point in the Wonderful World of Knowledge series.

A number of fascinating books are still to be released in the coming weeks.
