A SPEEDING driver told magistrates he had bought a new car that “went faster than I realised”.
Peter Atkinson, 63, was clocked at 52mph in Easington Road, Hartlepool, where the speed limit is 30mph.
Atkinson pleaded guilty by post to exceeding the speed limit on January 3.
Prosecutor Graham Jacobs told Hartlepool Magistrates’ Court; “The incident happened on Easington Road at 9.57am and a Renault motorvehicle was caught driving at 52mph.
“The speed limit on the road is 30mph.
“A notice was sent to the registered keeper at the time and Mr Atkinson confirmed he was the driver.”
A letter from Atkinson was read out to the court that said: “I would like to take this opportunity to apologise for breaking the speed limit.
“I have recently bought this car and it seems to go faster than I realised.
“I was late for an appointment and I know this is no excuse and I shall endeavour to comply with the speed limit more assiduously in the future.”
Atkinson, of The Spinney, Hartlepool, was fined £130, had his licence endorsed with six points and was ordered to pay £50 costs and a £15 victim surcharge within 28 days.
