A NEWLY-APPOINTED councillor has his wife to thank for helping him onto the council – because it was her seat he took.
Father-of-two Stephen Thomas could not hide his delight after being elected as the new Labour councillor for the De Bruce ward.
He replaced his wife Sylvia Tempest who gave up her seat after three years in March because she was “fed up” with making budget cuts.
Coun Thomas, 51, said: “It’s a strange feeling. Sylvia worked extremely hard and has done an awful lot of good, now I need to carry that on.
“I must say thanks to her for all of her support.
“Without it, I simply couldn’t have done it.”
Coun Thomas, a development officer for Healthwatch Hartlepool, says he has “strong socialist” values and has 20 years experience of working in local government.
He added: “I believe democracy is important so I must thank the electorate for what they have done.
“I want to be a strong community councillor and repay the faith shown in us both by the Labour Party.
