A HARTLEPOOL councillor has been told he will face no further action by a national standards body after posting what were described as “offensive” comments about a fellow councillor on a website.

Independent councillor Geoff Lilley, who represents Greatham ward, was investigated after posting comments on an internet messageboard regarding Councillor Marjorie James.

Coun James, who represents Owton ward, complained over comments and jokes made by Coun Lilley on a town website which she said were offensive to her.

Hartlepool Borough Council’s standards committee referred the complaint to the national Standards for England board which is responsible for promoting high ethical standards in local democracy.
