PREPARATIONS for a major summer carnival are in full swing.
Last year more than 4,000 people flocked to the Owton Carnival and organisers at the Manor Residents’ Association, in Kilmarnock Road, Hartlepool, hope this year will prove to be even bigger.
The annual carnival is set to take place on Saturday, July 30, between 10am and 5pm, at the field in Midlothian Road, off Owton Manor Lane.
So far organisers have managed to confirm there will be a climbing wall, fairground rides with a big wheel, a jazz band and there will be displays from the Hartlepool Hawks cheerleading group and the Phoenix Dance troupe.
This year there will also be a giant car boot sale and dozens of stalls.
Residents are being urged to put the date in their diary, while anyone interested in having a stall or pitch at the car boot sale is asked to get in touch to book their place.
Labour councillor Angie Wilcox, who represents the Owton ward on Hartlepool Borough Council, is manager at Manor Residents’ Association and she is urging people to support the event.
Coun Wilcox said: “We have always had a summer carnival and they used to be held in the grounds of Grange Primary School.
“Last year was the association’s 21st birthday so we wanted to do something on a bigger scale and we were amazed at the turn-out.
“More than 4,000 people turned up over the course of the day and we were delighted with that response.
“There is a bit of pressure to make this year just as big, but we have to respond to what the people in the area want.
“Hopefully it will be even bigger and better, that is the aim.
“We have a number of stall holders signed up already and there is still a few months to go, which is promising.”
The pitches for the stalls and car boot sale cost £5 each.
