A FLEDGLING charity which was launched to help new mums and their families tackle pre and post-natal depression is in the running for its first award.

Hartlepool mum-of-three Stephanie Addison set up Raindrops to Rainbows in November last year after suffering with the mentally crippling condition herself following the birth of her second child.

The 30-year-old felt there was not enough support for women and their families so set up the group which meets every other Wednesday in The People’s Centre, in Raby Road, Hartlepool, from 10am to 11am.

The support network has gone from strength to strength since it kicked off and now it has been nominated for a What’s On 4 2014 Junior Awards - which receives entries from around the globe - in the Most Outstanding Special Educational Activity Provider or Support Group category. Founder Stephanie is also nominated in the Most Outstanding Community Group Volunteer for children or families.

Stephanie, from the Rossmere area, said: “We are absolutely delighted at being nominated for these awards especially as we have only been running a short time.

“There is a lack of support for these parents suffering from post-natal depression and if we can fill that gap by offering our services and perhaps make their lives a little easier, then we are doing our job correctly.

“Post-natal depression is an illness that more people should be aware of, it may encourage more mums to come forward rather than suffering alone and in secret.”

The free group sees mums, and husbands and partners, of all ages attend and get benefit from talking to people who have been, or are going through, a similar situation.

Children are also welcome to attend and can play while the adults are treated to a tea, coffee, juice and biscuits.
