A FURTHER course to introduce people to Nordic Walking is being organised to meet popular demand.
The fast-growing Scandinavian fitness technique uses walking poles and can burn off up to 47 per cent more calories than normal walking.
It dates from the 1930s when cross-country skiers in Finland started to use ski poles during their out-of-season training when there was no snow and they found it an excellent way of toning both their upper and lower body muscles.
The new course, which is being run by Hartlepool Borough Council’s sport and physical activity team, starts on Tuesday, February 28, from 5pm to 6pm.
It costs a total of £15 for the six-week course and advance booking is essential, with places are allocated on a first-come-first-served basis.
Rachael Pringle, the council’s sport and physical activity officer, said: “Nordic Walking is proving incredibly popular in Hartlepool.
“The walking poles help propel you along at a faster pace than normal walking without you feeling the effort. It’s great exercise for people of all ages.”
